Meta, Facebook's parent company, is a world leader in AR and VR hardware manufacturing. Also, Microsoft and Apple are now working to enter this market. Although it is late, it is reported that Google is also working to join this emerging market.
Google is currently working on an AR headset, codenamed "Iris", which is expected to be released in 2024. It's reported that the upcoming Meta and Apple AR headsets, as well as Google's developing headset, will feature outdoor cameras to provide a better-mixed reality experience. Developed in a factory in San Francisco, the headset is said to be functional without an external electrical connection and looks very similar to a pair of ski goggles.
This headset is still in its infancy. Like the latest Pixel phones, this AR headset will be powered by a custom chip developed by Google. It is reported that a team from the Google Pixel team is involved in the development of this headset, but it is not yet known what the name of this headset will be.
Project Iris operates within Google in a highly secure environment. It uses special key cards to enter developing labs and the employees involved in this project have to agree to an undisclosed agreement. At present, about 300 people are working on this project and it is reported that hundreds more people are being prepared to be recruited.
